What Curriculum Should I Use?
Choosing curriculum will seem overwhelming at first. There are so many good choices and items can range in price. Get help from other homeschoolers. Not only can they advise you; they can help you use the curriculum they have recommended when you need help. In the beginning, stick to the basics to get yourself started. You have the freedom to make additions and changes along the way.
- Consider your child’s interests, strengths, and weaknesses before determining what curriculum to use. What works for one child does not always work for another. Homeschooling gives you the freedom to customize your child’s education.
- Determine goals and objectives for each child (consider intellectual, physical, spiritual, social – see Luke 2:52).
- Think about the homeschool approach that best suits your family.
- Order materials – when children are young you can used dollar store workbooks and lots of library books, when you are ready to begin ordering curriculum, visit curriculum websites directly or view a variety at Rainbow Resource.
- You can review curriculum at Cathy Duffy Homeschool Curriculum Reviews.
- Your curriculum is a tool, not a master. Do not feel guilty if you do not finish every thing in every book.
- Be flexible. Do not be a slave to your schedule or curriculum. Plan a last-minute field trip. Go to the park. Have fun and enjoy the freedom of homeschooling!
- Visit Starting Strong to learn more about your child’s learning style, your teaching style, different educational styles and approaches.
- Talk with other homeschoolers in your area to get recommendations Get Connected – CHAP
- Attend our yearly PA State Organization Homeschool Convention to view curriculum and talk directly with vendors CHAP Convention.
